The London Hub is open to any Stellenbosch University alumni residing in London.
This hub allows you to stay connected to Stellenbosch, without having to travel far from home.
By joining our hub, you are joining a group of alumni who live nearby. Our hub offers you a variety of opportunities, should you wish to be further involved after registration.
You can access professional expertise and mentorship, explore or promote job opportunities, and meet with alumni in your area to socialise.
We invite all alumni in the area to join the hub to find out first-hand about exciting opportunities in their area and to be a part of the global Matie community.

Meet your Hub Lead Volunteers:
Elizabeth Pepler is a chartered accountant and the head of the Internal Audit Department: Europe for RenaissanceRe, a (re)insurance company based in Bermuda. She oversees the internal audit activities related to the company’s European operations.
Elizabeth graduated from Stellenbosch University in 2006 with an honours degree in accounting. After completing her articles in 2009, she moved to Bermuda where she lived and worked for two years before relocating to London.
Elizabeth is passionate about personal development and in her free time, as a Certified High Performance Coach, she coaches and inspires individuals to activate their potential and advance their lives so that they can reach higher levels of performance in every area of their life.
Mariaan graduated from Stellenbosch University in 2010.
During her time at the university she was actively involved in various student activities. She was elected as a member of the Irene house committee in 2008/2009 and as primaria in 2009/2010.
After graduation, Mariaan continued to contribute and support Stellenbosch University by serving as a Wimbledon Cluster Convenor in 2010/2011 and deputy resident head of Equité Ladies in 2011/2012.
After qualifying as a chartered accountant and completing her trainee contract at Moore Stephens in Stellenbosch, Mariaan ventured to London to build a career in auditing.
In her professional career, Mariaan has a key role in the development and delivery of audit technical learning for auditors working at Mazars LLP. This includes supporting the audit service line to keep up to date with changes in Mazars’ audit methodology and the International Standards on Auditing. She also assists on Mazars’ group projects, where she works with international colleagues to develop and deliver technical audit learning for other international Mazars offices.
Karien graduated in 1998 with a MEng in chemical engineering. She spent 15 years in the oil and gas industry working in production, design and consultancy, both in South Africa and the United Kingdom.
After her children were born, she took a career break and has spent the last six years volunteering on the Board of Governors of her children’s primary school in London, as well as being an active member of the London Maties alumni network.
Her involvement in education has made her realise that she could combine two of the great loves in her life – chemistry and children.
She is currently working as a teaching assistant at a local high school and is excited to start her training as a chemistry teacher in September 2021.
She is passionate about encouraging more women to enter the field of science and engineering.
Sven Weidner is an experienced risk management consultant, who has been delivering risk management solutions in the financial services sector over the last 20 years, over four continents.
Sven has specialised in operational risk solutions, and covering all facets of operational and enterprise risks – from implementing a global advanced measurement approach (AMA) framework to managing the roll out of a risk and control framework (RCSA) programme – in the course of his work at leading investment banks. Furthermore, Sven has had held senior roles in model/market risk and compliance.
Sven develops and builds strong relationships with stakeholders at all levels. Sven has a very pragmatic approach, is solution orientated and has excellent communication and presentational skills.
Sven holds an MBA (portfolio management and derivatives) from Stellenbosch University’s Business School. Furthermore, he holds a postgraduate diploma in project management, and has a Bachelor of Commerce (economics and financial management) from the University of Port Elizabeth (UPE). He is also a charterholder of the Institute of Bankers (SA). He is currently finalising his doctorate in business administration, specialising in model risk management, from the Bradford School of Management.
His other activities include coaching and refereeing rugby at a local club level. Sven currently resides in Surrey with his wife, two children and various pets.
